2 – Fights Among Nations (Military Expeditions and Wars)

and

3 – Fights for Equality and Justice (in America and beyond)

Every Successful Organism Must Fight to Survive

The outcome of any fight is determined by a confluence of factors, but none more important than one’s ability to endure and thrive in the midst of conflict and challenge.  We highlight fights and fighters of the past so we might better appreciate the challenges, opportunities, and possibilities associated with the fights of today.

Fights in Rings

The TFM Collection includes a wide range of print articles, photographs, posters and other artifacts that shed important light on fights and fighters who helped transition boxing into a big-money sport with an international fan base.  The collection offers unique perspectives on fights, fans and the men who battled in rings for recreation and pay. One of the specialties within the collection are postcards offering amazing views of venues where boxers exchanged fist and sweat while showing their grit.  Images of marquee facilities such as Madison Square Garden in New York, the Coliseum in Chicago, and open-air arenas in California reveal the popularity of boxing back in the day.

FIGHTS FOR TITLES

F2

Fights Among Nations

The world’s leading military services have long relied upon boxing to condition their members, and also provide some  entertainment, and preparation for close physical combat.  The TFM Collect illuminates the many intersections that existed between boxing and military life during the early 1900s.  The collection goes beyond the intersections of fights by showing America’s military expeditions from 1890 to 1929.  The examination of specific wars includes consideration for both the preparation process and the weaponry deployed during the wars. Much of the collection focuses on conflicts from an American perspective, but TFM’s extensive print collection supports a broader, more global analysis of intersecting fights that changed the world.

FIGHTS AMONG FIGHTERS

F3

Fights for Equality

Massive social transformations followed in the wake of industrialization and imperial expansion during the late 18th- and early 19th centuries. As large numbers of families migrated from farms to urban settings, new expectations were formed regarding social norms.  Items in the TFM Collection enrich our appreciation for efforts to attain equality across race, ethnicity, class, and gender within boxing, military branches, and society at-large.
