GEORGIA
Tiger Flowers grew up in the Segregated South, which meant he was legally denied access to resources and opportunities afforded to white Georgians. Despite pervasive inequalities imposed by racial segregationists, Tiger Flowers developed the physical and mental abilities – meaning the drive, will, and determination – to distinguished himself as an exceedingly capable boxer.
Two of the boxers Tiger Flowers fought in Georgia, Sailor Darden and Soldier George Jones, extended their pride in having served in America’s Armed Forces into their boxing endeavors, as did many of their white counterparts during the four decades of THE TRIPLE FIGHT. But as Black Americans, incorporating military service in their fighting names had special significance that spoke to a central issues of citizenship and Black resistance to racial exclusion and oppression. Each time their boxing names was used, Darden and Jones asserted their right to the fullness of American citizenship. Segregationists had long labored to exclude Black Americans of their Constitutional Rights, often falsely claiming Black men had note shared in the blood and sacrifice associated with service to and defense of America. The names Sailor Darden and Soldier George Jones stated otherwise. Their boxing names proclaimed their patriotism, service, and right to engage in boxing as full Americans – a declaration that resonated with other Black veterans of World War 1, the US-Mexican Border War, the Spanish-American War, as well as the Civil War.

TFM is proud to re-introduce Sailor Darden to the world, as a proud American veteran and experienced boxer.

TEXAS
Tiger Flowers fought opponents in five of the eleven states that comprised the Segregated South during the 1920s, including Texas. An examination of the places where Tiger Flowers fought allows us to glimpse what life was like for Black pugilists following the Great War, WWI.
The Segregated South
During the 1920s, the segregated South comprised the 11 former Confederate states—Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. These states enforced Jim Crow laws that mandated racial segregation in public facilities, transportation, schools, and other aspects of daily life. In addition, Washington, D.C., though not a state, was also fully segregated by the end of World War I (around 1918), and many northern cities such as Chicago, Detroit, and New York had significant de facto segregation and discriminatory housing practices, especially during the Great Migration of the 1910s–1920s. Thus, while the formal legal segregation was concentrated in the 11 Southern states, the influence of Jim Crow extended beyond state lines, affecting racial dynamics across the U.S.

Tiger Flowers fought two Black opponents, Sonny Goodrich and Oscar Mortimer, seven months apart, in 1924, during his only two appearances in Texas.
Information from the statistical website boxrec.com indicates that Sonny Goodrich was a San Antonio resident who fought 40 bouts from 1919 to 1928. Goodrich’s ring career began with him taking on five opponents in five bouts in February 1919. These five fights were associated with military installations at Camp Travis, Fort McIntosh, or Knights of Columbus Halls, which were reserved for U.S. Servicemembers. This close affiliation with military establishments suggests that Goodrich was himself a military man, participating in boxing matches before being released from active duty as the Armed Services scaled down following the end of World War 1. From November 1919 through to the end of his career, Goodwin fought opponents in non-military venues, suggesting his term of service ended at the close of October 1919, or shortly thereafter. Although more than half of Goodwin’s recorded fights were held in San Antonio, he spent the better part of 1923 battling opponents in California. Goodrich ended his 1923 fight campaign back in San Antonio with a match against Sam Langford. The December 18, 1923, Goodrich-Lanford Fight was their second ring encounter. The pair had met in San Antonio a year earlier, when Goodwin challenged Lanford for the Mexican Heavyweight Championship, a title Lanford won and successfully defended in a series of battles held in Mexico from 1922 through 1923. Goodrich lost his first encounter with Langford on a technical knockout, but he won the second fight by outpointing his opponent. The following month, Goodrich battled Tiger Flowers, who had participated in the series of matches that brought Langford and a host of other prominent Black boxers down to Mexico in 1923. Unlike Langford, Flowers outpointed Goodrich in their only career fight. Oscar Mortimer was a Canadian heavyweight whose career spanned from 1908 to 1929. He resided in Parsons, Kansas. He did not have an extensive or distinguished fight record when he met Tiger Flowers in San Antonio on August 12, 1924, and his loss to Flowers did not leave him in a strong position when he faced Goodrich four months later in Mexico. The battles between Goodrich, Flowers, and Mortimer provide a valuable glimpse into the ring relationships among Black boxers plying their trade in Texas during the 1920s.

About TFM and F1-FIGHTS in RINGS (Boxers and Boxing). TFM is committed to telling the history of boxing as an international sport and with the broadest lens possible. We pay particular attention to ways in which boxing was cultivated and positioned in America to advance notions of power, masculinity, virtue, dominance, and opportunity from the outset of the American Empire in 1890, through the 1920s. Through multiple presentations, TFM illustrates how boxing functioned not only as a sport but as a powerful lens through which life was experienced, interpreted, and remembered during the four decades that best reflect THE TRIPLE FIGHT (1890-1929).
